About the instructor
From Mr. Deaver Many people ask why we teach martial arts? It all begins with school, elementary, then middle school, then high school. I was never good at sports, when I tried wrestling I got the snot beat out of me, because I was always smaller, weaker, more slightly built frame. I tried basketball, was to small for basketball, not fast enough, not coordinated enough and let's not talk about foot ball. For me, it started when I was in my 20's and just married with 1 child and a second one on the way. I grew up watching Chuck Norris, Bruce Lee and Bill Wallace famous martial artists from the 70's & 80's. Watching the cool moves, high kicks, jumps, spins etc. I was intrigued, so when I realized I needed stress relief as a parent and father, I searched for a martial arts school near me. All they offered was Judo, to me Judo was like wrestling so I waited. Then we found an add for a Parks & Recreation Dept. Program from our local newspaper with Tae Kwon Do. This was before the internet, lol. I tried the class for 8 weeks. LOVED IT! Couldn't get enough of it, I was hooked. Yes, I can punch, kick, spin, block, yell etc. I was no different than anyone else in the class of kids, dad's, mom's tall, short, heavy, skinny etc. I FIT IN! So like so many others I worked hard at moving up in the ranks, normally it takes about 3 - 4 years to attain your black belt. I started in August of 1986. With life, kids, moving from one location to another, changing jobs etc. I wasn't able to get my Black Belt till 1998. Yes that's 12 years! LOL After receiving my black belt I was able to assist in teaching and that is when I truly fell in love with martial arts. After working hard and receiving my 1st Degree Black Belt I was running a very small location for another instructor helping train others and share what I had learned. After moving up in rank and continuing to share I knew there was more! In 2004 I opened the Academy of Martial Arts by myself with 6 students in a local fire station. Boy was I scared! We grew, grew and grew. Kids got older, left to go to school, college, life. In 2005 I was asked to teach for the City of Ankeny's Parks & Recreation Dept. We started with 2 classes a week 2 times a week. It grew and grew and grew. We now offer over 5- classes a week in a stand alone location and still offer classes with the Ankeny Parks & Recreation Dept. To see kids excel, grow, learn focus, balance, coordination, to help them have enough confidence to not be bullied, get out of a bad situation etc. That is what it's about. Helping others in our community. We are so lucky to see these families, kids etc. Grow both emotionally & physically. To see the young ones grow up, graduate and go to college and be productive in life. And we are lucky to see some get married and return to either train themselves with their kids or they bring in their kids to train. We are privileged and lucky to be a part of the Ankeny community, let alone we are blessed to have students from Bondurant, Des Moines, Ames, Nevada, Polk City, Slater, Sheldahl and Story City. We can't say Thank you enough to our community. We are blessed to offer so much to help so many! God Bless! Kevin
